Attempting to Learn Me Some Flash

It's coming along. The first puppet I tried to make was just a simple remake of Yaga's cabin, but I really messed up that file while trying to figure out flash. Tried these guys out for size, made some more mistakes, learned some more, got some great help and I'm well on my way to being comfortable with flash.

Right now I'm working on another character puppet and a lipsync to go along with it, so I just keep working away. (:

It's a new year

Hope everyone had a fun time ringing in the New Year. It is now 2012, as crazy as it sounds. 2011 passed in a ferver of excitement and deadlines. I did more reading in the past year than I had since I think grade school, and I feel better for it. (: I just started reading A Feast for Crows today, and I cannot wait to read more later tonight. (AFFC being the fourth book in A Song of Ice and Fire aka A Game of Thrones for you tv viewers)

Alsoooo, yes! This is my 100th blog posting. It seems like such an astronomical number when I think about all the entries that had to be made, but I suppose my updating every day in November sketch-a-thon really helped P:

This year I thought it would be cute if I could make a something a little personal for everyone on my gift giving list.

I found this amazing fabric when I was out shopping with a friend awhile ago and knew it was 'the one'

Thus, many technology socks were born. Useful for ipods or phones or even loose change. It was fun pulling out the sewing machine again. So fun that I decided to keep it going.

Cirque Du Soleil: Quidam sketches

I had the pleasure of going to see Quidam Cirque Du Soleil show in Toronto yesterday. My first Cirque show! To state it simply, it was superb. So many times during the performance I just wanted to yell "STOP! Hold that pose!" so I could sketch it. These are just some memory sketches, no more than 3 mins per sketch I'd say. Was fun going back through the characters and reliving the acts in my head. I can't wait to see another Cirque Show :D

I was trying to play with lost and found edges as well as go really dark almost like it was emerging... Well, day 30. There ya go, I made it! Mama Mary is a simple happy woman who loves to bake and dance at the same time. Figured I would end this draw-a-thon off with a happy figure of celebration!

While my friend was watching the most recent ep of The Walking Dead, she was talking to me on IM and I was sketching. Now, I've gotten pretty used to this and really don't care much, sometimes asking for the details of the comic myself when she drops the "weeeeell, that's not how it went in the comiiiiiiiiiic/x was this way in the comic while y was that' line but tonight for some reason it irked me a little more than usual and I could not help but for this to be created:

I enjoy talks about the differences between mediums of the same series, I do, but, it often requires me to have enough time to consume both mediums... and while I believe it is my own problem for not having read them yet, so I can't be like OMG NO SPOILERS GUIS, I don't go actively seeking out what's happened when it's my full intent to enjoy the series later on in a different platform. I can still enjoy the show - as a show - on show like merits - as is. Without having to know how it differs with a play by play in every ep.

PS - friend, I still love you, it's ok. Now I just think it's funny.

Well, here ya go, folks! It's Herbie (what a horrible name) fully painted up based on this sketch of him I did for day 4 of November Draw.

This felt so good to do. Since my background painting contract ended, I sure have missed painting. Of course, I enjoy painting characters way more than anything else so I hope to get out quite a few more in the near future. I have so many projects I want to do, and yet, sitting on my couch and playing Arkham City is sooo good.

Also, I took this shot while painting for some reason or another. I think it's pretty funny looking.

This is Zed. She was once the leader of a strong race of warriors when she was injured in battle and barely survived. Nearly dead and forgetting who she was, pity was taken and a medicine woman was able to save her using hybrid techniques of ancient practices and electronic devices. She now lives a mundane day to day life, the people around her always fearful that she will get her memories back.

I like this sketch, when I first started my drawing session nothing was coming out, just multitudes of garbage, it was terrible. I'm glad this progressed organically turning into a lot of fun.

I am probably going to be making a turnaround and character page for her to do some more exploration, I really like the direction this is going.

Also, yesterday I decided to just my website, I like the look of it a lot more... decided to make the header out of a soon to be released coloured pic of Herbie. Lol, don't know why I named him that.

Bear was packin' honey.

This is Bear. He is a warrior. He killed and skinned the simple bear himself so now he can proudly wear it's coat.

This really makes me think of DragonBall Z. DBZ was essentially why I became an artist, in a weird, 'you-never-know-what's-going-to-happen-in-life' way.

Also, on top of these fun little sketches, I have been working on larger projects. Going to be doing some portfolio stuff and the like. I was trying to clean up a digital piece earlier this morning but found things just weren't working out, so I am going to return to the sketching stage as the composition just wasn't sitting well... /end rambling.

Here is the second part of my Happy Halloween giving. It's a little were-wolf/cat man thing. I had been sketching cats before drawing this picture and it just kept coming out so feline, but found that I really liked it that way, so finally settled on this design.

I went through a few different little versions of ending details and had a hard time deciding which I liked the best.. Did I make the right choice?

Pretty cool prompt I got from a weekly themed drawing club.

Here's the wiki on him: The Irish dullahan (also Gan Ceann, meaning "without a head" in Gaelige) is a type of unseelie fairie. It is headless, usually seen riding a black horse and carrying his head under one arm. The head's eyes are massive and constantly dart about like flies, while the mouth is constantly in a hideous grin that touches both sides of the head. The flesh of the head is said to have the color and consistency of moldy cheese. The dullahan's whip is actually a human corpse's spine, and the wagons they sometimes use are made of similarly funereal objects (e.g. candles in skulls to light the way, the spokes of the wheels made from thigh bones, the wagon's covering made from a worm-chewn pall). When the dullahan stops riding, it is where a person is due to die. The dullahan calls out their name, at which point they immediately perish.

I decided to take a bit of a different crack at him as opposed to just a floating suit of armor or guy riding a horse holding his head. The point of them was the challenge to draw a randomly drawn monster type that was a combination of things. Not just a woman, not just a fish, but a mermaid.. or a siren, or harpy or things along those lines. I loved the theme, and so glad I was able to scrape some time out to work on it. I feel like I haven't been drawing/painting for my own pleasure nearly enough recently.

It's not the full digital paint that I would really like, but hope to come back to it at some point in the future (:

I'll be updating again shortly to show off my 24 hour manimate film that I did a couple weeks ago :3

I've been a little absent from my blog lately- whoops! Life just has that way...

Weird cat thing that I sketched tonight - too stubborn to stop once the creativity was already gone ):

The next drawings are from a weekly kind of sketch thing I go to with other animation kids from Durham. It's nice to get away for a few hours and draw with pencil at least once a week. I got some pretty ok gestures that I will scan and post later.

These last two are from the first week... we all write a bunch of random into a hat, draw and combine!

SC2 Little Kerrigan

I was beginning to think I would never get this done. I started this well over a month ago, but things kept blindsiding me so I never got any spare time to finish it off... I am finally *mostly* over my tonsilitis, caught up on work and I found a wee little bit of time this morning in my empty quiet house because today is my birthday! I feel so old. (I was sick before I got the tonsilitis too ): My immune system kind of flipped me off and took a vacation for a month.)

Anyways, this long time in coming gift is for JoshSuth or AskJoshy or Josh Sutherland or whatever other alias he may have. I had planned on making him a piece of gift art since Dec when I started watching his youtube channel and catching all his commentary on pro SC2 games. (I'm pretty sure I watched them all, right from the beginning @.@) I was working so much on my film that I had no time to play SC2 myself and watching commentaries were a lot of fun and helped me stay productive and Josh's channel was amazing! I can't believe how much content he puts out. I started catching the V on those Friday nights I was always in on, working on my film, and started branching out and watching more coverage into the SC2 community. It truly is amazing! Now I seem to visit screddit, warpprism, and twitter nearly every day to see who is doing what or who is streaming. I watch any tourneys I can and am amazed with all the players. While I work on something, there is rarely not a stream on, I even watched Josh's all day birthday stream. I stayed for the tetris. Oh ya.

Well, I don't know what else much to say, I love SC2, AskJoshy was my gateway drug into watching and streaming it constantly (aka, eating up all my bandwidth). I'm really not a very good player myself, I stick to custom maps mostly and kill people mercilessly in starjeweled on the rare chance I get time to play, although I'm better at getting the sets than actually knowing what units would be good to send at what point, I mess up there a lot <.<

But ya! Big thanks to Josh, and all the other casters that do all this great coverage, all the players that stream and to the wonderful community (: SC2 rocks!

As the title suggests I started sketching/painting a gorgon/medusa inspired chick and I just don't think I will ever actually complete it so figured I would post it up with a little gif of how I was working through it.

Little gif is giving me some little problems for some reason. Plays fine from my harddrive but plays super slow and choppy and weird here. I dunno I saved it wrong or something, but did it in photoshop and used the save for web selection so not really sure where I went wrong. :l Oh well, it was just a test anyways!

Edit - I restarted my hiccuping computer, plays fine now off website. Yaaaay, pointless little gif win!

Try the Chilly Chicken

So, Chili Chicken is one of my favourite dishes from one of my favourite restaurants. I always imagine a cold, chilly chicken however while I'm eating it, despite it being on the slight spicey side as you can imagine, it has a bit of a kick!

Also, I tried to work really loose for the sketching and the clean up, getting out of my comfort zone in terms of brush use. The results are mixed but it feels nice to have time to just scribble again.

I once drew a weird cartoon chicken on the take-out box of a friends left-overs, and I've always wanted to actually make a drawing of it. Now seemed the appropriate time as I have drawn a lot of chickens and birds this year working on my thesis film Yaga. @.@

School is over and I am graduated and moved out of my college apartment. The transition has not been smooth, there always seems to be a lot of potholes in the roads to my goals, but I suppose if it was easy, everyone would be trying to do it. Right? (:

So during the summer, myself and 13 other Sheridan students headed over to China to work with CUC (Communication University of China) students on animated shorts. It was a great, great experience and would gladly return to Bejieng at any time to revisit some great friends and some great places.

I've been playing around with my christmas gift, which arrived 2 days ago and got set up last night and have been having great fun with it. A Cintiq! I am sooo excited to have it and have been puttering away on it, practicing cleaning up since I plan on doing a digital clean up in my film.

Anyways, back to China Co-op, I did a lot (I mean a lot) of character art during the co-op and have been cleaning it up for practice since some of it is so sickly sweet. Take a gander! I am very much in love B:

I had these picture come my way back from last summer when I had gone to see a play and spend the day in Stratford with Susan, Jessica, and her aunt, Sally. Boy, time sure does fly.

Personally, this is what I saw:

Some sort of death like creature with a skull like face and a coffee cloak. In the negative space of what would be the skull face I also saw what could only be considered a backpacking teddybear. Probably on his way to a picnic.

Finally finished this up today. I went through and did a massive rehaul on all my art files and school files on my computer and organized them so I could work more efficiently and through that discovered I had a lot of WIPs I've never finished. Hello, bloggers P: First up is an "inspirational image" for my fourth year film. I'm still running on the idea of The Bellringer, although the idea has changed quite a bit, and I imagine that it will continue to change in the coming months (:

Here we see the Celestial Mother, formerly known as the Sun Mother, coming over her temple (that'll change) trying to help the Moon Child (the Bellringer) return to the night! O:

Next up is a little leica that was put together for my Sound Culture class. Had to make a leica to a clip of music that we could choose from a list. I chose Poules et Coqs by Camille Saint-Saens. It worked well for a little idea I had developing from a conversation with my bf where the word, "internet" was misspelled P: Add a double-u to the word, and it becomes Internewt! Then this really rough leica was born (:

This little film idea is something I can see coming back to in the future. Time will tell though.. time will tell. (I hope it tells me make a great animation out of it :D Some have even suggested that I further pursue this as my thesis film...)

Today I am going to try to organize all my files that are currently on my computer, I just feel like my organization system... is not efficient enough. I'm not entirely sure how to make it better... but I have to do it before I try wading through the 100 some odd gigs of film files I have... *weeps*

Hey there art fans! (: Another update! And so sooooon. But it's another older piece and sneak look at a project I've been working on for a little bit, which I have no idea when it will come to completion because I imagine quite the numbers of hours needed to complete it to my standards. Here is a finished digipaint created in the first half of this year (:

I tried a new technique on it which turned out with mixed results. Definitely needs more exploration.

Back from China! Here's some old stuff!

Wow! What a whirlwind trip!!! O: I have lots of stuff to post from the trip, I want to include pics from the places I went, the people I went with and the work that I did there. (: Worked hardcore from 18 days solid... 10 hour days, 16 hour days... 23 hour days.... @.@ Sometimes longer near the end. My hand was craaaaaaaaaaaamped!

So I have a lot.. (understatement, A LOT) of files to go through before I can get into uploading recent stuff, and then I realized.. well, I have a ton of old stuff I haven't thrown up! So here it comes:

My first semester of third year action analysis. All drawn and coloured and composited and what-not all done by moi! I think clean up killed this, and I was in the process of redrawing/reanimating things from it. Of course, new projects popped up.. like films =.= Soooo here it is:

You may see some changes if you remember me posting the first leica from *cough* October.... But regardless, hope you enjoyed!

Well, I haven't been updating recently, and not even for lack of drawing or doing stuff, I'm just doing poorly at the upkeep seeing as how I am always running around! @.@ Once the project I'm working on through my summer internship is done, I'll post some of the pre-prod work I've done for it. Sooo many cute little drawings that I can't post yet! @.@

I have several larger more serious projects that are in the works but here is a little something something done for my friend Jessica. She is going to be printing her first draft of her novella Dead Men and needed something to go on the cover. This is the character, Mr.Grinner, a stuffed grim reaper (:

These are just different colours that I liked and couldn't decide between. Obvs went with the one above (:

I've been meaning to update for awhile. Not that I have all the much to share. Meant to take some pictures of my lifedrawing, and I have a few sketches that could be scanned and shared. Meh. Instead I'll show you some old(er-ish) stuff.

Whenever I'm in my hometown with my friend Jessica, we always try to make time so we can hang out in Starbucks with eachother. She with her laptop and me with everything and the kitchen sink. P: The Oshawa Starbucks is really chill, and we always reorganize their furniture and I've brought in my light disk and animated before. Totally wicked.

Here's a picture that I drew for Carlos, the manager of the Starbucks, for Christmas (:

Ahhh, I could go for some starbucks right now. Either a light caramel frap or a no syrup iced americano. That's noms right there.

Second image was drawn because another 2 members of our group were missing the first day I drew the picture (: We are occassionly joined by Jessica's aunt, Sally and Jessica's Queens' friend, Susan. We have a lot of fun reconstructing the store then... It's not our fault there are 4 comfy chairs and they are spread all over the store! Our butts need cushioning... we generally spend the whole day there. Except for dinner break of course which is conviently located next door at Azian Cuisine. (The most delicious place of deliciousness ever)

Lastly, a few pieces I mocked up for a cd cover. Prompt was black and red limited palette (: I had Kristin in mind when I was doing the swirly design on the side (: Love her work, go check it out!

Stop mo walk and arm tests.

Sifting through more school stuff, figured I'd upload some more stopmo stuff. Here we have the walk I did for my inclass assignment. Trying to make a smooth, slow, controlled walk. There's some popping I don't like but I was to far into the process to halt it all and go back. I always seemed to be the last person out of stopmo class, using up every last bit of time to try and get just that little bit more. You may remember my rough walk from a few weeks ago: Right here if you don't

And these little arm wave tests were from mid semester, when we first got to start using the full puppet. Getting used to isolation and stuff. Interesting stuff!

And I said I would talk about Nightmare Before Christmas since I got stuff for Christmas... Well, I don't want to take everything out of it's packaging while I'm at my parents house just to pack it back up to take it back to my apartment so I'll just tell you I got a few figures, and a scarf and a pair of gloves. Jack and Sally salt and pepper shakers, and shot glass looking things (they are ridiculously large for shotglasses though but not real cups) and I even got some Corpse Bride figures B: Go stopmo!

Now I should really get back to a commission I have... A 12x16 Acrylic piece. Real life painting! O: Heh, those old barbaric ways are still around.

Are ya reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaady? (TPatF anyone?)

So, because I like all of you so much, I figured I would update for Christmas. And I did start moving things around and getting things web ready while it was still Dec 25th, but now the day has come and pass, but I can still wish you a Happy Holidays and hope your Christmas was filled with joyous, happy wonder. In this post I'm going to just have a few things, although I planned on it being a big one with lots of school work, I think I'll leave that until tomorrow or the next day to fight blogger with videos and many many files B:

First up two drawings of women with bird elements. Drawn months apart from eachother. I plan on colouring both. We'll see how things go of course. The first is loosely inspired by Baba Yaga and some other ideas that were being thrown around in one of my film groups first meetings.

This next image is just kind of weird... but something that really appeals to my astethic. I miss drawing like this.These images of Hansel and Grethel were done for my literature course this past semester. I was inspired by this old illustrated story book compiled of many different stories from around the world. The artwork and colour handling is phenominal and I wish I could remember the artist's name or even the name of the book but alas, I left it at school when I came home for the Holiday B: I like the Black and White version better-er-er.
All of these images are some compiled images done for my group film: Kindling. The story of a "smoke-boy" trying to find where he belongs.

My next post will probably have something to do with either: Stop-motion (and, by relation, Nightmare Before Christmas, got a whole bunch of stuff for Christmas!) My Action Analysis Assignment and the steps which were taken to complete that OOOOOOOR that thing behind curtain number 3!

Hey lurks, this post is about STOPMOTION. Cause it's awesome.

In class assignment up first, done a few weeks ago. The Puppet Smash! I'm not overtly satisfied with how this turned out, I was having a lot of trouble with the timing and spacing and just getting things to work out for me. I was also very pressed for time, I would have loved to slow this process down and really work out where I wanted to go with it. 72 frame limit.. Definately used em. Could of had a lot better follow-through...

Next up is just a play around in class walk from today. Next week is the real assignment! I'll have to work quicker and be more precise next week but today was good practice! Ran out of time (of course) so you can just ignore that ending since I didn't have time to get the puppet to settle. A puppet balancing on one foot is awfully precarious...

We also got to make our own puppets in class. "Loonie Puppets" Super cute and super fun! Just made from wire and plumbers apoxy. Here's mine:

Of course he's hanging out with the coolest puppet of them all.

This year is pretty intense. Pretty awesome so far, although I would love it a lot lot more if I was not sick, sick, sick. Stop Motion in class assignment. Car crash! "They nearly collide at frame 13, following a predetermined path, then crash at frame 36" Neat. It was a lot of fun, this is my third take. My first I messed up almost immediately, the camera being way too close, I didnt have enough space for a nice composition so I scrapped it. Shot the second but thought the timing and spacing was weak and then shot this one. Liked it a lot better than the second but I was running out of time and getting frustrated with the red car cause the wheels were loose and kept rolling away after I would place it at the end for the slow out @.@ Not noticable that much in movement, but can be seen when still framing it (: Nit pick!

Next up we have my super awesome Action Analysis Assignment Leica. Pretty excited for this project. Really need to work up that layout and tighten up the character. I think it will be a lot of fun. And a good gear up for the group film process. (Woohoo pre-production work this semester? Maybe look foward to some concept art?)

Had my first Stop Motion class yesterday and I had a blast! I had never done stop motion before, although I've been a very long time admirer of the art, what with The Nightmare Before Christmas being my favourite movie and all. (: It was just a play around class but Aminder and I had some fun...

If you noticed the bump in the video, it's because I moved the box D': I bumped it while reaching over to move a pong paddle. Just another instance where I wish I was taller. I might have to start wearing platforms to that class.

Drawn last year in a paticulary boring art history class while I was in a high of watching the Avatar seasons (again).

I had a preview of this on my blog [link] back in April but I changed how I was working it and this is the result! Needless to say I didn't fix any of the mistakes in the lineart :l Oh well!

I feel like rewatching the seasons again, seems like an every 2 month or so kind of deal with me. I had some other characters drawn up from way back when as well... Katara, Sokka and a few different versions of Aang since he wasn't really cooperating. I thought I scanned them but I can't be sure of where they are or where the originals are... If I'm feeling ambitious at some point perhaps you will be seeing them at some point O:

Painted up a sketch I did last year. Done for Boris' bday, which is now very much past, although it was only a few days late by the time I had finished it, I ended up forgetting about it for like 3 weeks and then I realized I had forgotten her earrings. Heh.

Not too sure where I sit on this image... Since the sketch was from last year and I've improved since last year, or, at least I think(hope?) I have, I don't like the feel of the image. It's really lacking in a "real life" quality and is terribly stiff. A bit of a learning piece in terms of painting at any rate. (:

Can't say for sure or not I'll touch on this again.

So... I've seen this movie twice. And I really like it. Wanted to do a little picture of Spock. This came from a really ugly sketch of Spock which didn't look like Zachery Quinto at all. I then decided to paint it and it ended up looking a little more like ZQ although I wasn't trying to do a life like resemblance of him. Meh, I like Spock. I grew up on Star Trek, watching it with my mom (: Oh those tribbles....

And he's these colours cause I've been wanting to use these colours. Huh, simple enough.

These were done near the beginning of March, shortly after my Grandmother passed away. The whole experience was rather numbing and I didn't care much what happened with it. I like how some aspects came out but I'm pretty much on the fence. I didn't give this assignment my all but I gave as much as I could at the time.

Colour was added for digital painting course. John and Trixy (Rooster and Hen) definately turned out the best.

Sheriff John The Hero
He's the cock of the walk. Protecting the town and smitten with Trixy, he believes he has everything under control.

Pun's are cool.

The poses are pretty crappy.

This clucky saloon girl knows a thing or two about love. She's the finest piece of poultry around and has eyes for Sheriff John.

Gangrene The Villian
This good for nothing outlaw only seeks to disrupt Sheriff John's life and town.

Gumbo The Comic Relief
Gumbo was once John's sidekick, offering his services as a cook. He wasn't very good. He found his niche in bartending... visitors are advised not to drink the house brew.

I'm not ashamed to say I rather enjoy this series. It's such a simple premise but it's handled so smoothly I forget I'm watching a kids show and can still have fun with it. There are some really fine bits of animation too... anyways...

I sketched this last semester and only just started colouring it...

There are clearly an abundance of mistakes in it that I will be starting to fix in the next step... I'm going to attempt a lineless colour, which I'm not very good at. I find I never have enough contrast in my digital pieces, nor can I use colour as well compared to when I'm painting on canvas.

Heh...

In a moment of pure awesome Millie made us into Avatar characters.

In a moment of pure strangeness I threw some colours at it. Fear my backgrounds people. Fear them real good.

1 more week of school left and not much work left to do at all. While the majority of my peers seem to be running around trying to catch up on assignments 10 weeks late I had very little trouble handling and getting everything in on time.
